WPS Health Solutions sign

After World War II, more than 300,000 soldiers—13,000 of them wounded—returned home to Wisconsin, placing stress on the state’s health systems and shining a bright light on the need for affordable health insurance. Wisconsin Physicians Service was formed by the Wisconsin Medical Society in 1946 to meet both of these challenges.

WPS remained a division of the Wisconsin Medical Society until 1977 when it became separately incorporated as a service insurance corporation. Incorporated under Chapter 613 of the Wisconsin Statutes as a not-for-profit service insurance corporation, Wisconsin Physicians Service Insurance Corporation—known today as WPS Health Solutions—is not a stock or mutual company and has no shareholders or members.

More than 75 years later, WPS Health Solutions is still making health care easier for the people it serves. WPS conducts business within two primary divisions: WPS Government Solutions and WPS Commercial Insurance.

Government Solutions Division

The expertise WPS has developed over the years has enabled the company to become a successful provider of administrative services for the U.S. government. WPS Government Health Administrators manages Medicare Part A and Part B benefits for millions of seniors in multiple states, and WPS Military and Veterans Health serves millions of members of the U.S. military and their families through TRICARE.

  • WPS Military and Veterans Health administers TRICARE, a managed health care program for the Department of Defense. WPS serves nearly 9 million TRICARE beneficiaries worldwide and provides claims administration, customer service, and other related activities serving beneficiaries in all U.S. states and territories and overseas through three separate contracts.
  • WPS Government Health Administrators administers two primary CMS contracts for Jurisdiction 5 (J5) and Jurisdiction 8 (J8). Annually, WPS processes approximately 125 million claims with more than $49 billion net benefit funds expended. WPS serves over 7 million Medicare beneficiaries and 220,000 providers.

Commercial Insurance Division

WPS Health Insurance is a leading not-for-profit health insurer in Wisconsin and rapidly expanding to near-national coverage with its ever-popular Medicare supplement insurance product.

  • WPS Health Insurance offers Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) health plans for individuals and groups, Medicare supplement insurance plans, and administrative services for self-funded group health plans.
  • The EPIC Life Insurance Company, a wholly owned subsidiary of Wisconsin Physicians Service Insurance Corporation, offers Medicare supplement insurance plans in select states.
